Classes

Both the novice and advanced printmaker will find DPW printmaking classes that accommodate and challenge their skill level.

Class sizes are kept to a minimum in order to facilitate individual instruction.

Autumn 2010

Basic Etching (Etching I)
Instructor: Daemon Baldwin
Tuesday evenings, Sept. 7 – Oct 19, 2010

7-10 pm
Suitable for Beginners as an introduction to Etching and the Print Studio – 9 students maximum
This hands-on course is offered as an introduction to classic etching techniques with a focus on traditional copper etching. Participants will receive detailed instruction on image and material preparation, the etching process, and traditional printing with a professional manual press. The course will run even classes, in which time participants will see demonstrations, and participate in active studio time under the supervision of a professional instructor.

Additional $25 in class fees for course materials.

The Painterly Print:

An Introduction to Monotype Technques
Instructor: Heather Aston
Tuesday evenings, Oct. 26 – Dec 7, 2010

7-10 pm
9 students maximum
LIn this course the participants will explore both watercolour and oil-based monotype techniques. Students will receive individual attentin regarding drawing, painting, and composition and will learn to print using a manual press. Along with technique, students are introduced to different papers, materials, and the experience of working in a studio atmosphere. The course will open new possibilities for expression while exploring colour, form and line. there will be discussion and class critiques throughout. Suitable for any level of ability and as an introduction to the Print Studio and Practice.

Course Materials List will be distributed by the instructor.

OPEN STUDIO
7  – 10PM, Tuesday, Dec. 14 + 21 2010
$35 each session

10 participants maximum

The open studio is an opportunity for students previously enrolled in Dundarave courses to extend their printmaking time. There is no instruction but a studio technician will be monitoring the studio.

Participants must have taken a previous course through Dundarave Print Workshop.

Intermediate Etching

Instructor: Kelly Haydon

Dates: T.B.A. scheduled for Spring 2011

This course will give participants an opportunity to further develop their etching skills with instruction, demonstrations, and studio time. We will focus on tonal work using aquatint and students will be introduced to colour printing using a variety of inking techniques. Suitable for students with a basic background or for those who wish to refresh their skills. 

Photo Based Etching

Instructor: Daemon Baldwin

Dates: T.B.A. scheduled for Spring 2011

Intermediate / Advanced

Note: Students must have basic computer skills.

Learn to etch photo based imagery into copper using ‘home brewed’ methods. No longer will you feel the need for a darkroom, fancy exposure unit, or any other specific
use and expensive equipment. It all starts with your home computer and basic Photoshop usage, and quickly moves to the etching bath. 

Instructor Biographies

DAEMON BALDWIN

Daemon Baldwin is a full-time graphic designer and part-time artist with an MFA in printmaking. A move to Vancouver 5 years ago has provided the community foundation and resources to continue the pursuit of his dream of becoming a full-time artist and part-time
designer.

HEATHER ASTON

Heather Aston is a ful time artist/printmaker and works out of her home studio and the Dundarave Print workshop in Vancouver BC. Raised in West Vancouver, she graduated in 1971 from the Vancouver School of Art (Emily Carr University) with Honours in Printmaking. She has taught printmaking for 20 years in various schools, institutes and local studios. Her work is exhibited regularly in galleries in vancouver and Toronto.

KELLY HAYDON

Kelly Haydon, member and teacher at Dundarave Print Workshop and UNYA fell in love with etching 14 years ago and hasn’t looked back. Her prints have been exhibited nationally and internationally and her etchings have been published in book form.
